Annual Meeting of the Muslim Council of Elders

  • 2025-01-22

On February 21, Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazade participated in the expanded annual meeting of the Muslim Council of Elders (MCE), of which he is a member, held in Manama, the capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

In addition to the members of the Muslim Council of Elders (MCE), the meeting was attended by prominent scholars, marja' al-taqlids (sources of emulation) representing various Islamic sects, and distinguished figures of the Islamic religion, including Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad of Jordan, the Egyptian Minister of Awqaf Usama al-Azhari, the Grand Mufti of Egypt Nazir Ayyad, the President of Zaytuna University Hamza Yusuf, Ayatollah Mustafa Mohaghegh Damad, Ayatollah Ahmad Moballeghi, Sayyid Mohammad Ali Abtahi, former OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, and others.

The MCE meeting discussed threats and problems concerning the Islamic world, including the Palestine issue, and necessary practical measures to prevent the negative effects of artificial intelligence. The importance of new ijtihad (independent reasoning in Islamic law) and religious-scientific research by scholars representing various schools of thought, in response to the challenges of the modern era, was emphasized by the Muslim Council of Elders under the leadership of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif.

Supporting the Final Statement adopted by the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, which was held in Manama on February 19-20 under the patronage of the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, with the slogan "One Nation, One Destiny," the MCE members expressed their intention to establish a permanent joint body with the aim of preparing proposals that would serve mutual understanding among Muslim schools of thought. Muslim scholars were asked to present their concrete proposals on this matter.

In this regard, within the framework of the Bahrain Conference that concluded a day earlier, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, and Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, the Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, Muhammad Abdelsalam, and the Chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Board (CMB), Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazade, held a meeting with a group of Shia religious leaders and figures. The initiatives and proposals put forward by the Shia clerics were discussed during the meeting, along with points aimed at the success and sustainable development of the Bahrain Conference's mission.
